Saalbach-Hinterglemm is a combined borough in the province of Salzburg in the heart of Austria (in the district of Zell am See / Pinzgau). Saalbach-Hinterglemm is located in the upper valley of the Saalach river (Glemmtal) and belongs geographically to the Alps of Kitzbuehel. The highest mountains are the Spielberghorn (2.044 m) in the north and the Hochkogel (2.249 m) in the south. Saalbach lies at an altitude of 1,000 metres and has approx. 3,000 inhabitants.

History

The earliest evidence of settlement in the Glemmtal-valley dates back to 1222 AD. The name Salpach appears for the first time as the name of an old farmstead in 1350. Around this early building the village grew slowly. After World War II tourists started to visit Saalbach-Hinterglemm. These visits first peaked in 1991 when Saalbach was assigned to host the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships.

Historical impressions

Even the village´s emblem is dedicated to skiing. It takes the form of  a shield with two crossed golden skis - accompanied by a silver snow crystal!
